CHARLES COUNTY OFFICER ‘HERO OF YEAR’

THURMONT, Md. (Aug. 19, 2006) -- PFC Lee Potter of the Charles County Sheriff’s Office was honored recently as Hero of the Year by the Grande Voiture de Maryland, La Societe de 40 Hommes et 8 Chevaux, for helping save the life of a La Plata infant in October 2005.

The Maryland veterans organization presented the award at its 85th Grande Promenade and annual banquet hosted by Edwin C. Creeger Jr. American Legion Post 168, Thurmont, August 5.

PFC Potter, a veteran of 12 years with the Charles County Sheriff’s Office, was presented the award by Special Awards Chairman Earl E. Benner. Joining PFC Potter on the dais was Lt. Billy Caywood and Sgt. Augustus Proctor, both of the Charles County Sheriff’s Office.

PFC Potter was nominated for the award base on his actions Oct. 11, 2005 while on duty.  He was dispatched to a La Plata home, where he was first on the scene.

A one-year-old child had become entangled in the cord of the window blind and was not breathing. The mother had removed the cord from around the child’s neck but was unable to perform cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

In anticipation that Emergency Medical Services personnel would soon arrive, PFC Potter began CPR on the child. The child soon began breathing again and EMS personnel continued medical treatment.

The citation cautioned that had PFC Potter not begun CPR immediately there might have been fatal consequences for the child.

PFC Potter was first hired as a correctional officer in 1994. He was graduated from the Police Academy in 1998 and began service as a police officer in the Patrol Division. He and his wife Shelbi have two children.

La Societe was founded in 1921 by American Legionnaires and is named for the French Box Cars, which transported American Soldiers to the front in World War I. The box cars were designed to carry either 40 men or eight horses. There are 10 units, called ‘Voitures Locale’ in Maryland.
